ChevyTalk has moved to a new server

The new site address is http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb

If you get an error page you may need to refresh your local DNS cache.

If you are on a windows machine, from the START icon choose RUN,
type CMD and hit OK, this will launch a command window.
At the command prompt type:

ipconfig /flushdns

That will flush the cache on your machine,

Sometimes you need to run the flushdns command 2 - 3 times
and sometimes a computer reboot is even necessary after doing that, but that is how you clear your machine cache.

If it works you should now be able to get to the new site.

Hello
Where can I find the correct procedure to confirm the distributor is properly set ? The schematic diagram shows a "set timing" connector with 1 wire, but my '91 Caprice engine has 2 wires on that connector.
Thanks,
Miguel

The instructions are on a sticker on the upper fan shroud. (if still there)

Unplug the set timing connector, set the timing, and reconnect the connector.
On a 1991 the set timing connector is a one wire connector. It is a tan wire/w black stripe that (from the factory) is taped to the outside of the harness under the hood near the “Convenience Center” (black plastic cover on the passenger side of firewall).

I believe the timing spec is 0 degrees.

When you are finished, clear the ECM code that is set by unplugging the set timing connector.

After looking at your post and my reply - I replied information for a 1991 C/K pickup. So the above information I gave is for a 1991 truck.

What exactly are you working on? A 1991Caprice? What engine?
Where is the two wire connector you are looking at and what color are the wires?

Hi.
It is a 305, the 2 wire connector is on top, right side of the intake, entering/leaving the main harness. Cannot tell the colors at this moment (not nearby)
Could it be possible someone installed a 1992 or 350 harness onto it?
Engine is not currently wrapped by a Caprice body.

So what is the procedure ?.... disconnect that, start, check/set distributor for 0°, turn off, re-connect, clear codes, done ?

The tach signal wire is the other wire in the Caprice "set timing" connector. Tach will read zero when the connector is unplugged.

The wire should be a single connector and tan/black in color. It varies in location depending on the harness.

You have the timing procedure spot on. Most engines actually like about 4-6* timing though. 8*-10* will usually put you into trouble though.

I looked at the AUTOZONE site and found this:

To set the base timing the ECM EST must be bypassed. To do this, do the following:
• For all 1990-91 vehicles - ground diagnostic terminal (terminals A and B) in the ALDL diagnostic connector
• For all 1992-93 vehicles - disconnect the single connector tan/black wire at the right rear valve cover

here is a link to the info:
http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker...23d801ac29a.jsp

The site also shows the timing spec to be 0
